I am an artist who works in the medium of vitreous enamel. Vitreous enamel is glass fused to metal at very high temperatures. I have been passionate about this medium for more than 40 years. I have worked on everything from jewelry to small objects and vessels to wall pieces. My inspirations have been varied: patterns, faces, nature (especially underwater or outer space), and technology. I usually work in copper or silver. I often etch my pieces before enameling, but I also work in cloisonne (wire inlay) with silver and gold foils. I love color, but have enjoyed creating monochromatic pieces (grisaille), as well. Experimentation has always intrigued me, and I get great satisfaction in using something 'off the label' to create a different or unusual effect.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Glass (usually in powdered form) is fused to glass at very high temperatures (for my work, 1450° to 1500°F), usually multiple times, ranging from 5 or 6 times to 25 or 30 times. Each time, before firing, changes or additions are added. Sometimes I etch a piece before applying enamel.0

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

The colors in vitreous enamel are unparalleled. There are endless variations and hues. The colors are literally glowing, but you can have soft and muted, too, and even monochromatic. Enamels look like nothing else, and experimenting with colors and different effects is endlessly challenging and never boring!

What is something unique about you or your practice?

First of all, anyone who works in vitreous enamel id working in a unique medium. Compared to ceramicists, glass artists, fiber artists, we are very few. As for the unexpected, enameling can be very challenging and unexpected results (often quite marvelous) are not unusual.
