About The Artist

Brian Welch • Brooklyn, NY
Furniture • CUSTOM COMMISSIONS

I am a self taught furniture maker. I design and build beds, desks, tables and other one of a kind pieces for residential and commercial clients. After living in Japan in my twenties, I found work at a small antique restoration shop in Brooklyn. I couldn’t read a tape measure and had never made a thing, but fell deeply in love with furniture and haven’t looked back since. I am constantly striving to push the artistic expression in my work.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

First is the input stage; in which I draw inspiration from books, materials, images, nature and drawing. Next I make renderings until I am happy with the proportions and overall feel of the piece, at which point I begin fabrication in the shop. The design remains pretty fluid until the piece is complete, but always with the intention firmly established.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I am obsessed with material and think it’s the most important ingredient to any successful piece of furniture. This appreciation came about through my years spent salvaging old materials and incorporating them into my work. What I love most about making things is there is no end point – there’s always something new to learn or discover. That endless horizon, to me, is extremely alluring.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

When I found woodworking, a light switch turned on in my head and I’ve been doggedly pursuing it ever since. I’m most proud of the studio and apartment I built for myself to live and work in. It has been a labor of love and is a beautiful space, filled with materials and objects that inspire my work.
