Constantly exploring the interplay of light and color, Chieko Shimizu, a glass mosaic artist, endeavors to create pieces that capture the intricate beauty and complexity of the natural world. Growing up in Japan, Shimizu has acquired a profound admiration for the transitional seasonal colors, along with the gradation of lights that produce a splendid filter of the environment around her. Glass mosaic art is an exceptional form of artistic expression that melds elements of both abstract painting and traditional mosaic art. By meticulously layering diverse colors then preserving them underneath shattered glass, Shimizu is capable of depicting the transience and evanescent nature of light, resulting in artworks that are both aesthetically pleasing and deeply calming. Her artistic expression celebrates the transformative power of light and color, imbuing in viewers an appreciation for the intricate nuances and subtle complexities that can be discovered in even the simplest of surroundings.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Glass mosaic art is a captivating fusion of abstract painting and traditional mosaic techniques. Beginning with a painted substrate infused with hues drawn from the natural world, fractured glass pieces are assembled like a puzzle. Then a grout is carefully applied to seamlessly integrate the fragments. Through the multiple layering of materials, a profound sense of depth is achieved, allowing viewers to be transported into an immersive experience, captivated by the interplay of light and color.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I find myself deeply immersed in this technique, not only in its intricate process of breaking and assembling but also to the symbolism it holds. It resonates with my journey of resilience and self-discovery, having to go through numerous heartbreaks to emerge stronger and more resilient. I am reminded of the inherent imperfections that make us uniquely beautiful, challenging the superficial ideals imposed by society.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Many of my clients find themselves pleasantly surprised by the connection they feel with the art because of its unique process. I prioritize engaging in deep conversations with my clients, diving into their life stories, and by understanding the true essence of their desires, I can craft pieces that are meaningful. In this collaborative journey, I don't view myself as an artist, but as a friend, guiding them through self-expression and discovery with meaningful artistic creation.
