About The Artist

Timothy Sullivan • Marietta, GA
Ceramics • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE

After graduating from CMU, and SAIC with degrees in painting, and ceramics, I was forced to leave the arts and pursue a corporate career. Since my return to clay in 1998, I have focused all of my energies on producing high quality one-of-a-kind porcelain pottery pieces. I employ a variety of glazing techniques including trailing, brushing, air brushing and spraying. The pieces are primarily wheel thrown and altered and all are fired in reduction to cone 10.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Each piece is hand made by me using wheel, slab, and extruded components. When dry, each piece is hand sanded and fired in a bisque kiln and later in a cone 10 natural gas reduction kiln. Some pieces are additionally fired to low temperatures in an oxidation atmosphere for color development.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love the fact that pottery is not bounded by the time it which it was produced. I've seen work from hundreds of years ago that could have been made yesterday. Clay's biggest attraction to me is that its most defining characteristic is it's almost limitless potential. Its limits are my limits, my vision, and my tolerance for failure.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I fixed typewriters for many years, taught myself IT skills and went on become the managing partner of a 3-location computer store, and ultimately a senior manager with IBM. In 1998 I was able to return to clay in fulfillment of a lifetime passion.
