About The Artist

Betsy Williams • Dixon, NM
Ceramics • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE

Individual pieces, modest in scale, are at the heart of my work. I concentrate on unobtrusively conveying a sense of quiet attention and mystery. To my mind, the best pots are both understated and forthright, and can seem both brand new and archaic at the same time. They make themselves useful, practically and spiritually.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work is mostly wheel-thrown off the hump and hand-painted. Most pieces are wood-fired, with the exception of the tiny plates, which are fired in an electric kiln. Everything I make is meant for interaction and use.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

In the early days of the pandemic, I embarked on a research project of New Mexico wild clays. This research is ongoing and has taken an increasingly prominent role in my practice, lighting a spark and deepening my connection to everything I make. To date, I have collected 180 samples of various materials, and my ultimate goal is to transition the majority of my practice to wild materials, both clay bodies and glazes. I love being an amateur scientist, exploring nature, and incorporating my findings in each individual piece through testing, trial and error, and discovery.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The sense of calm conveyed by my work seems to take people by surprise, as well as the degree of versatility of small pieces.
