About The Artist

I love books. I love to read them, run my fingertips across the paper, smell the ink and feel their weight in my hands. I’ve been reading a book a week for the past seventy-five years. I began writing and incorporating words into my artwork in1990. That led me to making books. I’ve published four novels and two collections of short stories under the name Jo Fox. I’ve made hundreds of sculptural pieces based on various book formats and embellished them with text.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

I begin with one of two book structures: Sculptural or Codex. A codex is what we are familiar with when we think of books. I make a cover for a codex book out of archival boards and leather. I add handmade paper for the endpapers and then create a cover plate out of metal and photo-transparency. A sculptural book is purely about space. It is visual and decorative. It pushes the limits of what is expected.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Books have been around since before 3000 BC to record one’s business transactions, one’s thoughts, travels, one’s observations on life and nature, books used to write and draw in. In this age of Microsoft Word, AI Chat, Print on Demand, Kindle and Audible, it still feels authentic to me to own, to touch, and to cherish a single volume.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

What is unique about my work is that I make sculpture as a book, and a book as an object that is both decorative and surprising.
