Lee Gordon is a New England-based artist who has been blowing glass since 2008. Lee’s work draws inspiration from the natural environments of his coastal hometown. Working with hot molten glass, he layers earth-toned colors, patterns, and textures using an abstract painterly technique that brings life to the landscapes that inspire him. The results are unique hand-blown works of art.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work is hand blown art glass. Using an intense process of glass frit, cane, and often silver leaf to layer colors and textures I work in a "painterly" technique to create abstract landscapes of inspiration.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

When working, I truly submerge myself in the process of creating a piece of glass. For me it takes 100 percent concentration and near meditation for the true success of my art work. I also love the physicality involved with glass blowing and the combination of mind and body is truly rewarding for me to have an outlet to express my artistic interpretations.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My most current series titled, "Touchstones" are hot sculpted solid glass, which are sandblasted to create an organic look appearing more like stone or ceramic. Customers are surprised when they learn that they are glass. This line fits into my other series of work drawing inspiration from nature and textural patterns in a painterly technique. I believe my approach to glass is less traditional when I use techniques to purposefully make my work look less like glass and more organic in design.
