About The Artist

Janna Ugone • Easthampton, MA
Lighting • WHOLESALE AVAILABLE

I am passionate about lighting as a key component to transforming a house into a soulful home. I've always been drawn to the remarkable beauty of nature and I use this inspiration as a constant touch-point to my work. Our little company produces a modern heirloom collection of artful and distinctive handmade table, floor, ceiling and wall lighting, lamp shades, and home décor. Since 1987, our small team has fabricated our extensive line in a restored New England mill building in Easthampton, MA. We are driven by the creativity and craft of handmade lighting & tight-knit teamwork. Our studio staff, who have been adding soul to the collection for over 36 years, are a small group of masterful artisans that collectively create each piece. With extraordinary attention to detail, each piece draws you in with its artful imagery and fine metal and ceramic craftsmanship.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Each lamp requires dozens of steps to produce. We implement traditional lamp making methods and have even tracked down the antique machines they require to revive the time-honored process, creating sturdy lamp shades like they used to be made: to last. Where old techniques no longer apply, we’ve innovated, building and customizing equipment that gives us freedom to create. Each lamp shade incorporates my hand-painted artwork, and our in-house, state-of-the-art, massive giclée printer produces art prints with 12-color cartridges, giving the artwork the exact detail and the warm glow we’re after. Our studio is also equipped with a casting department where our ceramic bases, sconces and hanging pendants are designed, poured, carved, fired and glazed. In addition, we also design, assemble and wire our copper, steel and pottery lamp bases with much attention to detail, putting forth a collection that is authentically handmade in America.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I am passionate about lighting as a key component of transforming a house into a soulful home. I've always been drawn to the remarkable beauty of nature and I use this inspiration as a constant touch-point to my work. As one of our customer's said… ""making our home feel like a retreat."" I love encouraging folks to create a home as eclectic as the individual, mixing styles and having fun! Another passion is in creating and building local communities. We have built relationships beyond our studio and we love our constellation of local small-batch makers from welders to box makers contributing to every lamp that leaves our studio. We also believe in sharing our know-how through our mentoring program to a younger generation of artists. It’s a beautiful, caring community to balance a world of faster is better.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The sparkle! Many of our shades are pierced with pinholes or constellations that create a twinkling effect.
