The survival of the hand in a mechanised society cannot be denied. The goal of my art is to inspire the viewer with bold texture and unique emotion. I feel handmade quilts are powerful in that they bring a warmth and emotional charge to those they touch. Trained in sculpture and ceramics the magnetism of textiles became paramount. I am a full-time self taught quilter and textile artist, I enjoy creating original art using repurposed, found and hand-dyed textiles in each new creation. I grow and harvest dye plants in my gardens incorporating natural dyed fabric and yarn in my pieces. Often the materials I use are unique to typical quilting such as yarns, velvets, upholstery, and garment fabrics to achieve a stand-alone texture-heavy bold art piece.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My art quilts start with a pencil sketch, fabrics are cut and sewn together then quilted usually by hand. When an art quilt is complete it is named, signed and dated and a quilt sleeve and wooden dowel is seen on the reverse for hanging.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Art quilts possess a unique draw, a power and I feel my pieces evoke this feeling.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My pieces are made by hand from found and repurposed textiles, often not used in quilts such as garments and upholstery fabrics. I often dye my own textiles using dye found in nature and plants I grow in my dye gardens.
