Justin Bailey (he/him) is an artist, designer and educator based in Bloomington, Indiana. Justin received an MFA in Studio Art/3D Design from the University of Iowa and a BFA in Studio Art/Sculpture from Webster University. Through the design and fabrication of furniture, objects, and lighting, Justin dwells on the form, material and utility of canonical design objects such as seating, lighting, and vessels. Each work is a study of bending and pliability in material and gestural form as Justin employs a range of processes ranging from digital fabrication, woodworking, metal working and more to design and craft works in the studio.

Tell us how your work is made.

Justin Bailey’s work, begins first as simple gestures, movements and lines, before expanding, repeating, and magnifying. The acts of drafting and drawing build to incorporate surfaces, materials, connections, technology, and craft, each of which share an inquiry of their own. In the Polyp Lighting Series, in order to create the laser cut shade, Justin created a simple generative design code for digital drafting software based on geometry that allows him to continuously reshape the lampshade and adjusts all shape fittings that are used for assembly. He learned how to do this while working at home during the pandemic.


What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

Justin is always searching for new ways to integrate design, craft and fabrication, working both in hands on traditional means as well as behind a computer. A naturally curious person, Justin is interested in utilizing skillsets in making to reshape and redefine the built environments in which we spend most of our time.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

The Polyp Lamp base is a universal fitting for the series, and while the shade can come in a wide array of shapes, each base stays set to the same size and is 3D printed in source traceable recycled plastic.
