About The Artist

Kathryn Bowman • St. Charles, MO

Painting, drawing, and making has always consumed me. My day job was Flight Attendant. Beadweaving traveled well providing a much-needed creative outlet. At a point, I felt my work needed original metal findings, so I squeezed in metalsmithing classes. Learning the vastness of metalsmithing, I focused on what will complement my beadweaving. Now my work focuses on floral imagery to remind wearers and viewers of our connection to nature, and our need for conscientious stewardship of our plant.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

Most of the time I start with a sketch, but sometimes it is mere glint of a color. Color is a driving force in every creation. From the original color spark, I bring in other colors until the composition makes sense to me. Now I use colored pencils and I ask myself most of the questions and resolve how large a piece will be, shape, necklace, bracelet, or possibly a brooch. Next, I sit down with the materials and slowly start putting it all together. It’s a process that cannot be rushed.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I use two media; glass bead weaving and metalsmithing. Each having a unique intrigue for me. I've always been drawn to the color that beads offer the jewelry world that no other technique comes close to. In an effort to offer sound durable work, metal closures became essential to my work. Learning the simplest metalsmithing techniques sent me down a rabbit hole of learning I will never find the end to but continue to develop so the beads and the metal complement each other in each piece.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

Not being a shy person, I know that reflects in my work. My jewelry is bright, colorful, eye catching and on a larger scale, statement jewelry. Into that I add a degree of sophistication by including harmony, balance, and wearability. My jewelry appeals a stronger woman of the world. I hope my work helps the woman that wears it feel their power and reach her biggest dreams. I actively sell online through my website and Artful Home.
