I didn’t think about making art, I just made things. It wasn’t until university that I focused on art as something to do. My feeling was that my discipline hadn’t been invented yet, which was partially true. Much later, during an online photo scanning class, I had my epiphany. I decided to finish a scan of a tree as a small object to see what it looked like. When I got it back and held it in my hand, I knew I wanted to design small objects on a computer and make them in metal. A total surprise.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work begins with a question, an intuition or a gemstone. Almost all of my designing is done on a computer. I print scads of variations just to see what they look like. It’s a back and forth between formless and form. All my pieces are personal explorations. I only make what I like or am interested in. The pieces are finished when they say something. When they reach this point, I prep them for their final print and casting

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

It didn’t seem possible for me to think with objects and form. I had to completely redo how I worked, which I did through the computer. The computer helped because what it makes doesn’t really exist. Silver helped because it’s versatile. Gemstones helped because they’re almost alive. At least they speak to me. It’s led me to make things I never even knew were inside me. I do have to pay attention when I get to the physical part of the process. That can trip me up.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My pieces are loudly subtle. They won't be pinned down. I want there to be as many ideas and opinions about them as possible. I’m not going to make them easy. I make my passions. Silver helps. It can be anything. I can make pewtery looking pieces or things that look like fine jewelry. It feels boundaryless. I don’t feel confined. Silver is fluid and demur. Accommodating, even though it’s hard to work with. The computer helps, especially with textures. My work changes as I get to know them both.
