Muffy Young has been a handweaver and dyer since 1978. Originally inspired by textiles and landscapes when traveling in South America at age 16, Muffy continues to be influenced by the colors and design elements of Peruvian and Guatemalan cloth, and draws inspiration from textiles and natural landscapes of Central Asia and Africa as well. She has won numerous show awards, including 3 ACC awards of excellence and her work is found in the collection of the Racine Art Museum. Hand dying her silk yarns gives Muffy a great deal of control over her color palette, and her 24 and 32 harness looms allow her to be extremely creative in terms of scale, texture and motif. Muffy's passion is to create pieces that are truly "wearable art:" beautiful to view and touch, and comfortably luxurious to wear.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work is handwoven on a loom. First the yarn is dyed with acid dyes. At the present time, silk is the only fiber I use.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

First thing, I love making something beautiful from beautiful materials. The silks that I use are of the finest quality. I am especially enthusiastic about the natural colored silks such as tussah, eri and peduncle. Next, I love figuring things out. I first learned to weave because I wanted to know how looms worked. Now, one pattern leads to the next and there's always something new to try.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My patterns and use of color are unique and unexpected.
