I have always had a strong sense of curiosity. How and why are questions I ask in most situations. This ideology lends itself to art and creation on so many levels. The what if I try this mentality. I am a multidisciplinary artist who loves to capture the unexpected in her artwork. It has always been my vision to create work with this sense of wonder and surprise. Art that looks one way on the surface, but upon further investigation holds surprises and hidden treasures. Most of my work can be worn in multiple ways or is reversible and uses materials that are juxtaposed. I make small one-of-a-kind collections usually based on a thought or idea, using semi-precious metals, gemstones, and handmade paper.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work comprises mostly of hollow-form shapes, built from flat pieces of metal using hammers, blocks, and a torch to create free-form shapes. These shapes are then pierced or scratched to add different dimensions to the surface of each piece. I use traditional stone setting techniques to add gemstones or other materials such as paper. I make collections of one-of-a-kind pieces using sterling silver and gold along with precious and semi-precious gemstones.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I have been sculpting metals for over 25 years. I fell in love with the process of lost wax casting and never looked back. I apprenticed for 13 years with a jewelry designer learning how to fabricate, carve, and set stones. Creating jewelry keeps you very much in the here and now. You have to be present when working with fire and hammers. You can lose a piece you have spent hours on very quickly. It teaches patience and perseverance.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I am a multidisciplinary artist who loves to capture the unexpected in her artwork. It has always been my vision to create work with this sense of wonder and surprise. Art that looks one way on the surface, but upon further investigation holds surprises and hidden treasures. Most of my work can be worn in multiple ways or is reversible. I think there should be interest from all angles, so if a piece of jewelry is being worn and flips with the movements of the wearer it looks interesting from every aspect. I believe through art we can connect with the deepest parts of ourselves, in this journey we can begin to understand and appreciate others and the world we live in. If we can be curious about all things we create compassion for each other's similarities and differences. Art and curiosity can create bridges where crevasses exist.
