After several apprenticeships with potters, I earned my BFA in ceramics from UMass and my MFA from the School of the Art Institute Chicago. I am presently a studio artist living and working in Massachusetts. My figurative work explores themes of the human condition using clay and antique found objects.

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My work is hand built using clay techniques and often combined with antique leftovers of the world, wire, springs and movement. I like to texture, stain and paint my figures lending them further identities and mystery.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I have always loved clay even as a kid. Starting out as a potter, I have evolved into an artist who makes art objects using clay. Clay has wonderful properties of form, flexibility and surface variation that combine beautifully with wire, old tools and metal containers. Over time I have honed my skills and ability to mingle these materials. My passion is fueled by hunting and discovering just the right found pieces to inspire my characters.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

My Father was builder and my mother was an avid collector of antiques so it follows the my artistic identity comes from these influences. People often view my work with amusement and wonder, and they remark on the detail and the unusual mixture of materials. This engagement inspires me to continue investigating the hidden pasts and intentions of my characters.
