Inspired by my own garden and all things floral, my earthenware wall hangings are created entirely by hand in my Richmond, Virginia studio. I use a variety of hand building techniques and incorporate wheel-thrown elements to bring an arrangement of clay flowers to life. Low fire glazes and underglazes brighten my blooms and add realism; flowing ribbons and small insects give movement and whimsy. The hand-stenciled tile background provides a charming contrast. Wallflowers are my tribute to the real thing—those garden beauties that bring us joy and make us smile. My goal is to capture their loveliness; to surprise and to delight!

Q&A with the Artist

Tell us how your work is made.

My pieces are hand built using slab and sculptural techniques. They are bisque fired then painted by hand using a variety of unglazed and clear glaze. They are wired for hanging on a wall.

What makes you passionate about the medium you work with?

I love using earthenware for the vivid color achieved when firing at the lower temperature ranges (05-06). Earthenware seems to be so perfectly suited to my subject matter. I also love the challenge of clay. I think it’s so exciting to use a hard and static medium to create gesture and movement.

What is something unique about you or your practice?

I think my pieces are surprising and unexpected because they reference a traditional floral still life painting but they use dimension evoke scale and movement. Hanging them on the wall has the added benefit of keeping delicate petals out of harm’s way
